Nikol Štrobachova (also known as Kukla) is a musician and modular synthesis teacher based in Brno, Czech Republic, who also work for the community-driven Czech company Bastl Instrument. She is well-known in the modular synth Youtube community for her video series as “Patchení s Nikol”, and she gives workshops all around Europe aimed to help inform and empower women in their early steps into the world of electronic music performance. Live, her music is based on lower tempo rhythms with ambient layers of sound and modified noises of fauna and flora. She is also a member of Pink Noise, a community of women trying to create a safe space for females/non-binary people and create a more equal environment in the music industry.
For her workshop in Munich, she will on one part focus on the basic theory of sound, demonstrating basic waves (sourced from her modular system) on an oscilloscope and using filtering to show how we affect sounds by tweaking the knobs. On the other part, she will talk about female influencers in electronic music. She picks essential performers, producers and DJs, both contemporary and from the past, whose work is or was fundamental to the evolution of the electronic music scene.
This workshop is aimed to empower women* to either start making electronic music, or get more tools for their art. This is a hands on workshop, and participants will be encouraged to try a modular synthesizer system and ask all the questions they might have.
* This workshop is a safe space for women, queer, trans and non-binary people, and takes place in English.
